Hi all. Just joined the forum. Acquired my 1st ever marine tank from a fellow reefer here so the tank might look familiar. To be honest I have zero knowledge and understand the steep learning curve ahead. Do help share and guide me along the way.

Currently tank is cycling. It has been 9 days now.

    Tank is 3x2x2.

    Equipment -
    Pump - Jebao 9000 DC
    Skimmer - BM curve 9
    Wavemaker - Maxspect Gyre 130
    Chiller - Hailea HS-90
    Lighting - Maxspect Razor 420r 180W
Coralife 3X Turbo Twist UV sterilizer

    Incoming equipment -
    Phosban 550
    Jebao dosing pump 4 ch

    Filtration media in sump -
    Filter wool
    Seachem Matrix
    Marine Pure block
    Sera Siporax
    Liverocks

Using caribsea reef sand X3 bags.

Currently trying to figure out a place and tank size for qt. running out of space at home as I was a bit blind sided and did not know I needed one. So no livestock until I can sort this out.

Planning to keep lps, anemones, the usual clown and tangs and shrimp for a start. After that maybe frags for beginners.

    Welcome bro.
Having a qt tank is not really necessary. Its good to have, but not a must.

In every new fish livestock, i will just isolate it in a isolation box and train it to eat pellet before releasing it into the display tank.

Feel free to post any questions u have in mind (:

U do know how to know if your tank has been cycled anot right?

Are you running your jebao 9000 return pump through your chiller before going back to tank?

    1) If you have the budget, run dual return pumps for reliability. Get an Ehiem or fluval to run it through your chiller back to main tank. It just not worth investing the time and effort to end up with a tank crash because of a china made pump.

    2) What bacteria will you be dosing ? If you are using the prawn meat method, give your tank at least 2 months to build strong de-nitrifying bacteria on your bacteria media. Check your nitrate level every week, you should see a raise follow by a drop slowly.

    3) Although not a must have for qt tank but I think it's a good practice. Proper quarantine and copper treat all your fishes and trained them on pellets will pay off in the long run against any parasites introduction to tank. Before you go out hunting for your fishes in lfs, you might want to do some research on their characteristics so you know if they are territorial or shy and decide the sequence of their addition to tank.

    4) I do not know how good are the razors leds but I do know some corals just do not do well under leds. Time and observation will tell.

    5) What will you be running on your phosban?

    6) You do not need sofisicated dosing of 3 parts for lps and anemone dominated tank. All you need is an reliable auto top up with a wavemaker inside and mix kalkwasser in it (I strongly recommend tunze 3155).

Hi All. Thanks for the reply.

I wish I could just go with YDKM method of quarantine, but James is also quite right with having a qt. what size or volume is good? Space is currently a problem at my place.

James I will give a serious thought to a eheim or fluval in the future. Hope the Jebao don't die first.

    Did atm colony dosing.

I Will be running Rowaphos with the Phosban.

YDKM, when you say isolation box, how does it look like? Does it hang in the DT?

How long to keep in isolation? Will it fit fishes like blue tang? Will they be able to move around in the box?

Depend how big the box u buy.
I like to buy the biggest iso box available. I have my belize queen angel in it too. Yes the box are big enough for them to swim around.

i have always keep them in until they are pellet trained. Domt worry if first few days they ignore the pellets. Is normal.

Imo any new fish should be added into the iso first. Why?? My goldflake and belize angel took 1week before they start eating pellet. Imagine if i just throw them into the DT. Dont think they will survive. If they do, chances are low.

Need some help. My parameters dropped. What should I do?

    15/11
    Kh 7.7
    Ca 400
    Mg1150

    23/11
    Kh 4.8
    Ca 300
    Mg 1080

    Nitrate 20-25ppm
    Nitrite 0
    PO4 0.03ppm

All using salifert test kit. Salt is coral pro. Currently not much thing in dt except for rbta, plate coral and some zoas . 3 small pajama cardinal and a shrimp.

The corals are definitely consuming the parameters.
You can raise it temporary with "sodoum bicarbonate " and "calcium chloride "
That can be purchased in iwarna.
Mix your own solution and raise it first while waiting your aquaforest component 123

Your nitrate levels are also running abit high. might want to monitor them closely. Other then chaetos, are you employing any other types of nutrient export?

I believe it is ok for lps dominated tank for nitrate at that level but not sps. Am I right?

The recommended levels of Nitrate for an lps tank are only around 15-20ppm. Keep it at 15ppm if you want to go into more exotic lps like chalice or Lobo.

You might want to consider running an ATS to control no3. Have a look at Santa Monica thread

Kh keep it within 0.5-1 dkh per day
    Ca 50ppm per day
    Mg 100 ppm per day
