Does anyone know if there's any real difference between purposed CR media like TLF Reborn media, and th simple and cheap coral chips that freshwater hobbyists use to buffer their pH? Both are supposed to be dead coral fragments, but the price difference is huge.

From what i read in reefbuilders, it says the TLF ones has been rinsed in RO water to leach out residual phosphate etc.

    So is cleaner lol!!

Is there anyone actually using coral chips in freshwater lfs kind??

Haha, so actually those who have the time and space to soak coral chips for a few weeks before topping up can save money! It's like $10 for a huge bag

    I use the $8 10kg bag coral chips :)
The pH to effectively melt it is 6.3pH

Can show how your bag of coral chip looks like? Where did u bought it?
Can you also collect your CR effluent and measure it with your hanna ULR phosphorus checker??
Im sure the info will be very helpful.

You sound like you don't quite believe me. You can check with rich pat or jason. Hehe! Tomorrow I take a pic to show you the bag of coral chips I using. You can buy it from ah beng $8 for a big 10kg bag. Even if the po4 is high I will still use it cos overall my po4 can still be brought down to 0.015ppm without much po4 media.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion that these cheap media can be used safely James! Next trip to C328 I'll get a bag :) but hor, melting point at 6.3 means it's actually different from the Reborn media which melts at 6.5. Wonder what's the difference

    Awaiting for your experiment jame.
Im using ARM coarse media, running ph @ 6.4
I think the difference is, coral chip(lower ph) have to melt more to have the same output as from the TLF(higher ph) ??
Means coral chips is less efficient.

I just anyhow bombing what i thought hahaha

So cheap use more also nevermind lah. My experiment shows that 6.5pH cannot melt fast enough to cope with my consumption rate. Only 6.3pH and below then effective. KH I know confirm no issue keeping up, the calcium is low though. My calcium always hovering around 380 ppm only. Growth rates maybe slower. This weekend I free, I will measure the effluent kh/ca/po4 value.

My coral chips consumption rates about 2kg per year so $8 / 10kg can last me 5 years. I am really a cheapo reefer.....hahaha

Collected a cup of my CR effluent outlet and did a water test on it. Below are the results.

    Phosphate : 0ppm
    Alkalinity : 10.8dkh
    Calcium : 390ppm
    Magnesium : 1140ppm

Question to ponder: Is expensive CR media really necessary?

Amazinggg. Will most likely top up my CR using the coral chip! Got natural trace elements too.

    James,

The effluent kh of 10.8 seems low. My arm run at ph6.5 can yield 16 to 18dkh.

So now the question is eventhough u save more on media, your co2 consumption may be higher. Money is one thing but making more trips to co2 shop to refill is troublesome.

I just anyhow bombing what i thought. Hahaha

I did a test on my cr output last week.. I am using DD RowaLith W 9-15mm.. Running at ph 6.5.. The output on Hanna is over the range.. Blinking at 300 ppb so should be more than 16.8 dKH after conversion..

Ca is at 380ppm.. But my tank ca is low at 380ppm and I have yet to adjust it up..

Wah I'm glad i asked this question. Looks like a cost saving method if one doesnt mind topping up co2 more often
