Decided to experiment it myself and post it here to share and also for a record after seeing a few of my friends have successes by raising nitrate to rid those *green algae* and abit of cyano off.

The analogy is that, by raising nitrate, the bacterias then can start to reduce the phosphates. Thus starving off cyano and algaes.
This is due to the bacteria *redfield ratio*.
    Bacteria will consume
    106parts of carbon : 16parts of nitrogen : 1 part of phosphorus

As of 8 nov, no3 is undetectable (by salifert)
Am raising nitrates by dosing calcium nitrate chemical.
Thanks to a good friend for delivering this small packet of 20grams CaNO3 and a small digital scale that allows measurement up to 0.1 grams at 1am! Very helpful & generous.

The dosing concentration i found in the net as follows :
    14.141grams : 160 lit : 46.41ppm no3

My tank is 500lit nett. So have to do conversion .

    14.141grams : 500 lit : 14.87ppm no3
    0.95grams : 500 lit : 1ppm no3
    0.095 grams : 500 lit : 0.1ppm no3

Its too difficult to precisely measures 0.095 grams.

So i mix it in rodi :
    1.7grams : 400ml rodi
    0.095grams = 22.35ml

Means i will need to dose 22ml to raise 0.1ppm in my 500lit nett tank.
Started to dose on the 10 nov 130am.

    Lets see how it goes.
*i know theres other methods like blackout, etcetc. but i would like to test this nitrate raising myself*
For those who knows me well will know i am always itchy hand in testing things out. Have tried so many systems as well as dosing soya bean soymilk.

Very interesting. But your calculation I don't understand.
    And where to get xxxnitrate?

Calculations is just do directly proportion and indirect proportion only.

What do u mean xxxnitrate?? U mean calcium nitrate?? U can get it from http://www.ecocityhydroponics.com/lushgro-calcium-nitrate.html

    Yes potassium nitrate also can.
But need license from SPF/SCDF (not sure which) to buy. Its a restricted chem. Can use to make bombs.

    Tonight is my 3rd dose.
In theory, if i need to reduce 0.05ppm of po4, i will need 0.8ppm of nitrate.

    0.05*16= 0.8

Sadly, my phosphorous hanna checker spoilt. Or else i can test if there is a drop in po4. As of now, will observe if the algaes/cyano goes away.

You can get 5% solution of potassium nitrates from Singapore Hydrophonics (@ Crawford lane area) locally. I'm using it to dose my frag tank.

Yes. Forgot to add on, only 5% solutions can buy off shelf. Only the solid form cannot.

    Thanks for sharing subzero!

Got to see the bottle dosage instruction and calculate from there. Can't see properly from subzero pic.
i believe this KNO3 5% solution got to go Crawford lane area and buy as its seem to be not available in their online store.

Think their shop at Crawford Lane has closed few months back after its founder passed away. So better to call them first.

    Alternatively can try ecocity:

    http://www.ecocityhydroponics.com/

Got my fertilizers from them, distributor for HPC.

Mine were 10% solution versions when i got them some time back. It appears that the police is enforcing that only 5% solution is permitted nowadays.

Agree, best to call ahead to check for stock.

Have dosed 3 times of 0.1ppm daily. Checked with salifert, still undetectable.
Will increase to 0.2ppm / day now.

Dose 0.1ppm/day for 3days, still undetectable.

Salifert no3 test kit is not that accurate... Im planning to dose it high enough to be detectable
