The battery for my MP10's died a while ago and I had been putting off buying a new battery since I thought I didnt need one urgently...well a need arose as electrical works are taking place in our building recently.

Anyway, I looked at a new battery price and didnt like the price...for a battery...so I read that some people replaced the internal battery.

So decided to order a replacement battery and fixed it myself. New battery cost £37 shipped. A battery from Ecotech is around £175 shipped.

    Here is the process...

    Dead battery:

    Drill out the rivets:

What it looks like inside (nothing much...just a battery and some connections):

Some housing and connections is all:

The new battery (in front) and old (behind):

    New battery in place:

Quick test to ensure connections and battery is good (yes I have monster veins...):

Secure cover together with Rivet Gun and Rivets:

    All done:

Tested on my MP40 and works fine. In fact new battery is 21A.H. Which means it has a bit more juice and my MP40 will last longer than running with the original battery.

What this also means is that you can put together a battery backup for your Vortech pumps pretty easily and less than 1/3 price Ecotech charges (just buy battery online, a charger and the Ecotech cable).

Since my friend James72 shares lots of useful info I thought I would do something as well.

Excellent sharing my friend. I have one dead ecotech battery back up being wanting to open it up to share but you beat me to it. Will go fix mine up coming weekends. Thanks for sharing again. I am sure many reefers will benefit from this simple diy.

Yeah, its the same guy LOL. Me. Hahaha. I am joined to so many Reef Forums...over 15 probably.

I dont agree with everything in the hobby being so expensive; it cuts off many people who want to keep a reef tank but cost is too much for them. So a few DIY to save money here and there definitely helps.

Why do you need to buy the battery online? Just curious is the battery special and not available in battery shop?
May I ask where you get the battery online?
